I’m interested to know where this actually took place and if people put things other than magazines in there.

so magazines make people fat? i dont understand.

These magazines are filled with unrealistic unattainable female forms. They reinforce society’s ideal of what “beautiful” is. Diets and exercises are so common place in these magazines that you think you’re doing something wrong if you’re not already doing these things. So no, magazines don’t make you “fat,” but they make you believe you’re “fat.”

i understand what you are saying, i honestly do. Bulimia, anorexia, and all around self-deprecation are more than likely due to advertisements like these. And encouraging goals of unhealthy and unattainable sizes is an inappropriate and often misleading goal of these magazines. But in a society that is drenched with obesity (over 1/3 of all adults, and nearly 17% of children), how can one sit back and say, “oh America, you’re not fat, its the magazines that make you think that so just stop reading them and you will be happy and healthy i promise.”
making people feel ugly is wrong. but telling overweight/underweight individuals that it is fine for them to be unhealthy if it makes them happy is not right, either. I would love if this advertisement said “SHED YOUR INSECURITIES HERE.” or something. but this whole “fat is beautiful” movement is unhealthy. So is the “skinny is beautiful” movement as well. It should just be the “HEALTHY IS BEAUTIFUL” movement. Love people for who they are and encourage them to be happy with who they are and strive to be as healthy as possible. And dont base feelings for another person according to their size.

I think we’re agreeing, really. But the thing is is that not everyone who is “fat” is unhealthy. Because first of all- how do you define fat? Many would consider me fat even though I don’t. Many would consider themselves fat even though they’re not what society would consider to be “fat.” It’s fucked up and yeah, sure, we have an obesity problem because all of our food is outrageously unhealthy. But we also have a huge eating disorder/body image problem that is hardly ever addressed.  The way that beauty is idealized and perpetuated in our society is sneaky, manipulative, and a huge problem.
And outside of weight issues, these magazines are terribly misogynistic anyway. Have you read the latest tips on how to keep your man happy? Because they sure as hell don’t have your happiness in mind.
